Evolutionary roots of nonverbal communication
Annotation
This article examines the evolutionary origins of nonverbal communication as the primary and fundamental form of inter-subject interaction. The author draws on comparative studies of primate and human communication — including the landmark experiment in teaching the chimpanzee Washoe American Sign Language at the University of Nevada (1965) and the study of dogs' gestural vocabulary at the University of Salford — to demonstrate the genetic continuity between animal nonverbal behaviour, pre-verbal infant communication, and adult human gesticulation. The emergence of verbal speech is framed as an evolutionary breakthrough that did not replace, but complemented nonverbal signals, opening possibilities for abstract thinking, intergenerational transmission of knowledge, and coordination of social processes. The article argues for the conscious study of nonverbal communication as our shared evolutionary heritage.

Most of us perceive the language of gestures and emotions as something secondary, auxiliary to verbal speech. However, these forms of communication in fact arose much earlier and are fundamental to our communication. They did not replace words, but only supplemented non-verbal signals, creating a complex system of information transmission between people and in society.

Animal experience
To better understand the nature and importance of nonverbal communication, it is worth turning to our closest relatives in the animal kingdom – primates. Scientists have repeatedly tried to teach monkeys human language, but these attempts failed due to anatomical and neurophysiological differences. However, studies have shown that primates have excellent mastery of sign language and actively use it to communicate.

One of the most famous experiments in this field began in 1965 at the University of Nevada (USA). A chimpanzee named Washoe was taught American Sign Language (ASL). At first, it was taught by humans, and then Washoe herself began to observe them and copy the gestures. By the end of the experiment, she had mastered about 350 signs and even passed this knowledge on to her young.

This example clearly illustrates two key points:
1. Nonverbal communication is natural and intuitive for both animals and humans.
2. We learn gestures and emotions mainly through observation and imitation, rather than formal learning.

Thus, nonverbal communication is a kind of universal language that unites all living beings and allows them to exchange important information about the world and social relationships.

From animals to babies
Another interesting study was conducted by scientists from the University of Salford in Manchester. They identified 19 different gestures that dogs use to communicate with humans. It turned out that this “dictionary” is very similar to the so-called referential gestures that babies use to communicate with their parents long before they learn to speak.

In fact, in the early stages of development, a child thinks and interacts with the world in the same way as other highly organized animals – through nonverbal signals. And although we acquire verbal language as we age, these primary ways of communication do not disappear. They continue to function, albeit in a slightly modified form.

The word as an evolutionary leap
But if nonverbal communication is so effective, why did humanity develop such a complex and extensive system of verbal communication? The fact is that the emergence of speech was a real evolutionary breakthrough that opened up new horizons for the development of human intelligence.

First, the word made it possible to convey abstract concepts, to think about the past and the future, to build complex logical constructions. Second, speech made it possible to accumulate and transfer knowledge between generations, to form collective memory and culture. And third, verbal language became a powerful tool for coordinating joint actions, distributing responsibilities, and managing social processes.

However, to realize this potential, serious anatomical and neurophysiological changes were required – the formation of a special speech apparatus and specialized language areas in the cerebral cortex. These adaptations determined the uniqueness of humans as a species.

Nonverbal communication in the modern world
But despite the importance of verbal communication, we must not forget its evolutionary roots. The language of gestures and emotions remains a powerful tool for interaction, persuasion, and information exchange today. This is especially evident in public speaking, where a harmonious combination of words and non-verbals is the key to success.

Therefore, it is important for a modern person not only to develop speech skills, but also to study the patterns of non-verbal communication. By analyzing our own gestures and emotional expressions, observing the reactions of our interlocutors, we can significantly increase the effectiveness of our communication. And the conscious use of non-verbal signals will help us better convey our ideas, convince our audience, and build trusting relationships.

As the experience of the animal world shows, it is nonverbal language that is our common evolutionary heritage. And although verbal communication has brought us to a new level of development, we must remember our roots and appreciate this ancient but powerful tool of interaction.
